At Central Industries PLC, we have always believed that the quality of what we make is only as strong as the skills of the people who install it. That belief is why, for years, we have been investing in the professional development of the plumber and electrician communities across Sri Lanka — because better-trained tradespeople mean safer installations, better outcomes for customers, and a stronger industry for everyone.
On 4 June 2026, we marked another proud milestone in that commitment. Working in partnership with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, Central Industries PLC facilitated the award of NVQ Level 3 certification to 150 electricians at a programme held in Kurunegala.
What Is NVQ Certification?
The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) system is Sri Lanka's national framework for recognising and certifying the skills of trades professionals. NVQ Level 3 is a significant credential for an electrician — it formally recognises their competence, opens doors to better employment opportunities, and gives customers and contractors greater confidence in the quality and safety of their work.
For the 150 electricians who received their certification on 4 June, this qualification represents years of hands-on experience now formally recognised by the state.
Two Pathways to Certification
The programme was conducted through two mechanisms:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) — for experienced electricians whose existing skills and knowledge were assessed and formally recognised, without requiring them to sit a traditional examination.
Examination — for participants who demonstrated their competency through a structured assessment conducted in partnership with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
Both pathways reflect the reality of Sri Lanka's trades workforce — skilled, experienced, and deserving of formal recognition.
What This Means for Sri Lanka
The benefits of programmes like this extend well beyond the individuals who receive their certificates. When electricians are formally qualified:
Households and businesses receive better, safer electrical installations
Electrical safety standards across the country improve
Tradespeople gain formal professional recognition that elevates their status and earning potential
Qualified electricians are eligible to apply for overseas employment opportunities, opening new economic pathways for them and their families
A Commitment That Continues Island-Wide
The Kurunegala programme is part of an ongoing initiative that Central Industries PLC has been conducting across all nine provinces of Sri Lanka. To date, we have run plumber and electrician development programmes island-wide — reaching communities from Jaffna to Matara, from Kurunegala to Batticaloa.
This is not a one-off corporate social responsibility exercise. It is a long-term investment in the people who work with our products every day — and in the safety and quality of Sri Lanka's built environment.
We congratulate all 150 electricians who received their NVQ Level 3 certification at Kurunegala, and we look forward to continuing this programme in communities across the island.
